- Take as many photos of the damage as possible before you start cleaning.
- Protect your property from further damage by moving items to a safer place, boarding up windows, and patching up holes in walls or roofs.
- Save receipts for items you purchased to clean, which you replaced in your home, and placed to protect your property (such as tarps, plywood, etc.). Many policies will reimburse you for these costs.
After carefully evaluating the type of loss you have sustained, you must submit a formal written Proof of Loss that your insurer will use to begin a serious claim process. You must specify the type of loss incurred, as it relates to your coverage, and describing the event that caused the loss are critical steps in ensuring that your loss is covered.
